Jean JOFFRION was born in 1671 according to "Some Early Families of Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana: Genealogical Studies of the Early Generations of 36 Families" (Grémillion) although I've been unable to find this record in Québec or Montréal (Verèches and Chambly records do not go back to 1671). On 4 April 1695, Jean Maillot hired Jean Geoffrion to make a voyage to the 8ta8ois (Ottawa Indians). The contract was signed before notary Antoine Adhémar. (Diane Wolford Sheppard (FCHSM, Michigan's Habitant Heritage; April 2014; "17th Century Engagé Contracts to the Great Lakes and Beyond 15 June 1690 to 23 May 1695 Part 2") According to another article by Sheppard entitled "17th Century Fur-Trade and Military-Expedition Families", Jean was one of a group who travelled to the Great Lakes, Huronia, Hudson Bay, Labrador, or the Mississippi Valley on fur-trading expeditions as well as merchants, and families who travelled to the Great Lakes on military expeditions.
